Kolkata & Ganga Sagar Tour Package
Overview
Kolkata - How Calcutta got its name is however, a mystery. It may have been derived from kali kata, a reference to the art of producing limestone from burnt snail shells. Possibly the origin is khal kata, in view of its canals. Or, it could have been an anglicized version of kali kotha, meaning the abode of the goddess Kali, the presiding deity of the city. Calcutta's heritage has many facets: historical, social, cultural and intellectual. Under the British, the city flourished economically and socially. Before independence, the city led India's intellectual and nationalist movements. Art or philosophy, entertainment or science, it has been the birthplace of the country's leading lights for well over two centuries. The best time to visit is between October and January, when the weather is cool and charming. This is also the season of festivals, with the annual Durga Puja transforming the city with its vibrancy, light and color.
